Kranget Island Project

PNG Power made history when it laid submarine cables to supply electricity to Kranget Island from mainland Madang on April 19, 2007.

The Madang Shipping Agencies and Port Services came to a stand still for 45 minutes on that day as workmen from PPL and the contracted divers hauled cables across the passage to the island and laid it on the seabed.

It was the first time in the electricity industry history of PNG for such a project to take place, and it was completed successfully.

About 350 submerged submarine cables were laid on the seabed, while the rest of the project involved the installation of 150 meters of open HV, 1.5km of HV ABC cable and installation of a 50 kVA 3phase transformer.

The project was spearheaded by Manager Transmission, John Yanis, and a team from Yonki and was completed on July 28, 2007.

The 22kV submarine cable would service up to 500 customers on the island using the MSKs, with an expected capacity load of 30 kW.

The Madang center staff also conducted awareness on electricity safety, and use of MSKs on the island on August 6, 2007 with locals there.

The island lies about 370m across the Dallman Passage from Madang town, and the cables run from Gym Fitzgerald's property at Kalibobo to the island.

The project was jointly funded by the Member for Madang and the PNG Government to the value of K700,000 as part of the Rural Electrification Project.

The island has a lodge, Lutheran Shipping staff residences, private run guest houses, a primary school, trade stores and permanent houses.
