Board Directors

The PNG Power Board of Directors includes members who have extensive engineering and commercial experience in PNG. The board comprises of:


William Kenjibi

William Kenjibi

Board Chairman (Acting)

William Kenjibi is an economist by profession who graduated from the University of Papua New Guinea in 1976 with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics.


From 1977 to 1981, William was employed by the University of Technology as an Assistant Lecturer in Business Studies and Economics. Whilst at the University, William took two years off from 1979 to 1981 to successfully complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.


From 1981 to 1985, William worked as Manager for Moka Investment Pty Ltd, a local trading company. William also served as a Director of the Western Highlands Provincial Government Secretariat from 1984 to 1990. Whilst there, he was a Director on the Board of the Western Highlands Development Corporation Ltd (business arm of the Provincial Government) and its subsidiaries.


Mr. Thomas Laka

Thomas Laka

Director - Appointed 30 April 2003

Thomas Laka joined the Port Moresby practice of the Coopers and Lybrand in February 1985 after graduating from the University of Papua New Guinea with a Bachelors degree of Arts in Commerce in 1984.


Thomas obtained another Bachelors Degree of Business (Accounting) from the Deakin University, Victoria, Australia in 1988. Mr Laka was admitted to full Associate Membership of Certified Practicing Accountants of PNG in 1987 and also the Certified Practicing Accountants of Australia in 1989.


In 1993, Thomas commenced private practice and is currently the Principal of Al-Omega Accounts, a registered accounting, auditing and taxation consultancy practice.


Mr Laka has vast experience in assisting and advising clients in their accounting and taxation requirements, financial management, training and general business matters. Further, in addition to normal statutory audits for corporate clients, Mr Laka is involved in audits of projects funded by AusAID and Asian Development Bank in accordance with their specific requirements.


Mr. Sana Somare

Sana Somare

Director - Appointed 16 May 2005

Sana Somare graduated as an Engineer in 1992 while working with the Foundation of the People of the South Pacific as a Project Engineer. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) Degree from the University of Technology, Lae, PNG.


Whilst working with the Foundation for the People of South Pacific, Sana was provided formal training by the German Government Development Agency on the design of micro hydro and water systems. The training covered the complete design from geotechnical investigation to electro mechanical design systems to commissioning of micro hydro plants and water supply systems.


Prior to being employed by the Foundation of the People of the South Pacific, Sana worked with LKN Construction in Singapore as a Works Supervisor and as a Trainee Engineer doing general engineering design.


In 1991 he was engaged by the Australian Construction Services in Sydney as a Trainee Engineer and was doing general engineering. In 1993 he was appointed the Site Engineer for Barclay Brothers with the role of general site management, cost monitoring, cost control and management of sub contractors.


Since 1994 Sana has been running as Project Director, SBA Limited, a Construction Company, involved in the civil works projects and building construction. In particular he is responsible for undertaking estimations, tendering and implementation of infrastructure projects.


In addition to being a Director of PNG Power, Sana is also an Executive Director of Damai Limited, a Member of the Somare Foundation, a charitable organisation and, in 2005 was appointed to the Board of Amalpac Ltd, a leading packaging company based in Lae.

Corporate Governance

The PNG Power Board believes that good governance is a critical prerequisite for a high-performance organisation with a sustainable future. Good governance ensures the delivery of outcomes sought by the shareholders and ensures sound financial and risk management practices and effective compliance and auditing programs.


The PNG Power Board has two subcommittees:

  • Board Audit Risk and Compliance Committee; and
  • Board Tenders and Capital Works Committee.

As statements of principles and as guidance to Directors and Management, the Board also adopted:

  • Principles of Corporate Governance;
  • Charter - Board Audit Risk and Compliance Committee;
  • Charter - Board Tenders and Capital Works Committee;
  • Internal Audit Risk and Compliance Charter;
  • Code of Conduct for Directors and Executive Management; and
