New gas turbines to boost supply in NCD

Two new Titan 130 Gas Turbines have been installed at Kanudi.

The machines, worth about K55 million, arrived in July this year and were installed by Contractor Turbomech (Switzerland) and sub contractor Aisi Bishman including PPL engineers.

Work is still progressing on the fuel system, electrical and substation fittings for the station, with completion date expected to be before end of October 2010.

Housing two 15 Megawatt turbines, the power station is developed to cater for the increasing demand for electricity in the nation’s capital.

The Titans will run on diesel until 2014 when they can be converted to use gas if it is available.

The machines are expected to be run during peak demand hours from 8am to 4pm.

This development is part of PPL’s mission to identify, develop, plan and implement required infrastructure to meet the growth in electricity demand including meeting customer satisfaction and reliability standards.

There are forecasts that the PNG economy would double in size due to the LNG project and other developments and PPL is making every effort to meet any rise in power demand.
