Safety FAQ's

General Safety

  • Be wise and live. Leave all your electrical problems to a licensed electrician.
  • Do not play with power points or any electrical items at home. It is dangerous and you could get electrocuted or cause serious injuries to your body.
  • Remember a spark or tingle can be fatal. Report a spark or slight tingle immediately.
  • Always switch off and pull out. Always pull the plug, not the cord.
  • The earth wires in any installation or appliance is your lifeline. Make sure the earth wire is intact.
  • Have your frayed or chinked cords replaced.
  • Replace your old fashioned plugs without barriers with standard plugs.
  • Use 3 core flexible cords on electrical appliances with motors.
  • Use only approved flexible cords or extension leads or those that are wired by a licensed electrician.
  • Do not plug flexible cords into a light socket.
  • Do not use two core flexible cords as extension leads.
  • Do not meddle with electrical fittings or appliances and cords.
  • Do not use an appliance that isn't earthed.
  • Do not use appliances with a total rating of more than 2400 watts on standard power point.
  • Do not stack power points with adapters. Have a new power point installed by a licensed electrician.
  • Use approved shielded portable hand lamps.
  • Never use dryers and lamps in the bathroom.
  • Appliance with twin flex should be double insulated or marked 'DOUBLE INSULATED.'

Buildings

  • Seek technical advice from PNG Power before building near power lines.
  • Have an electrician check the earth wire connection before replacing or cutting metallic water pipes.
  • Ensure that the metallic pipe work is complete.
  • Ensure that earth wire is in good condition.
  • Ensure that the earth wire connection at the water pipe or earth electrode is firm and in good condition.
  • Before carrying out repairs, have the light and power circuits disconnected by a licensed electrician.
  • When nailing, ensure that there are no power cables directly in line with the nail.
  • When refurbishing, ensure that PNG Power disconnects the power supply to the installation.
